The railway was built under the direction of Herbert Septimus Harington between 1898 and 1903 to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj. The route winds from a height of 656 metres at Kalka in the Himalayan Shivalik Hills foothills, past Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Taradevi, Barog, Salogra, Totu (Jutogh) and Summer hill, to Shimla at an altitude of 2,075 metres above from the sea level.
The Kalka Shimla Heritage Toy Train is a big attraction for tourists going to Shimla. It indeed is a great example of British Engineering. Even to this day, the controls of the heritage train remain the same as during the British regime right from the signals to the narrow gauge track though the steam engine has been replaced by a modern diesel engine.
In the year 2008, the toy train was granted the status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It indeed is wonderful to experience this rich heritage.
