This Kalka to Shimla railway is a 2 ft 6 inches (762 mm) narrow gauge railway in Himachal Pradesh, North India which traverses a mostly-mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. The railway was built under the direction of Herbert Septimus Harington between 1898 and 1903 to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj. The route winds from a height of 656 metres at Kalka in the Himalayan Shivalik Hills foothills, past Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Taradevi, Barog, Salogra, Totu (Jutogh) and Summer hill, to Shimla at an altitude of 2,075 metres above from the sea level.
