HimachalTourism.Ind.In – offer Himachal tour by Toy Train, the state has two narrow gauge trains tracks as one is from Kalka to Shimla and another one from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar. Kalka to Shimla Toy Train is most popular attraction for tourists.

This Kalka to Shimla railway is a 2 ft 6 inches (762 mm) narrow gauge railway in Himachal Pradesh, North India which traverses a mostly-mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. It is known for its dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages along with more than 100 tunnels during this amazing journey from Kalka to Shimla.

The railway was built under the direction of Herbert Septimus Harington between 1898 and 1903 to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj. The route winds from a height of 656 metres at Kalka in the Himalayan Shivalik Hills foothills, past Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Taradevi, Barog, Salogra, Totu (Jutogh) and Summer hill, to Shimla at an altitude of 2,075 metres above from the sea level.

The Kalka Shimla Heritage Toy Train is a big attraction for tourists going to Shimla. The train runs on a narrow gauge rail track and connects various small towns dotted on the Himalayan slopes between Kalka and Shimla. The heritage train, 112 years old, was inaugurated way back in 1903 by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India.

It indeed is a great example of British Engineering. Even to this day, the controls of the heritage train remain the same as during the British regime right from the signals to the narrow gauge track though the steam engine has been replaced by a modern diesel engine.

In the year 2008, the toy train was granted the status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It indeed is wonderful to experience this rich heritage.
